And some days the practical has to give way to the theoretical. I’m currently doing some research on stuff, objects and rubbish. So today’s pic is a few of the books I’ve been looking at today. Daniel Miller’s Stuff is a good read and exonerates me from my guilt at hoarding stuff, since ‘Culture comes above all from stuff’. I wonder if this means that as I have lots of stuff, I’m über-cultured? Interesting as Stuff is, there are no pictures in it, so for the visual stimulus, I turned to Objects by Martin Parr. A sentence from his introduction really resonates with me, namely: ‘[The collections] echo the themes of my work as a photographer, which I also define as a form of collecting. By applying some order to our chaotic world, and assembling things into categories … I can make a more coherent statement about my relationship with the world’. However, the best find of the day was Joseph Cornell’s work in John Scanlan’s On Garbage. Oh, this is a man after my own heart.
