In recognition of the Winter Olympics, today’s word is piste, and although we all use it with reference to ski-ing, the first meaning (and that chosen by the OED) is: ‘A trail or track beaten by a horse, mule, etc.; the track of a racecourse or training ground. In later use also more generally: any track or trail’ (OED). Not having had time to look for tracks beaten by horses, I opted for this cow on the skating track that is currently dominating the Rathausplatz. Horse? Mule? Cow? Does it matter? As they all taste the same in burgers, I’m not going to get too angst-ridden about a minor substitution. And since it is Friday, I’m guessing that there might be some vodka quassing in Sochi tonight and that the cows will not be the only ones on the piste.
Day #38 of a 365 project, where the daily pic is informed by the OED word of the day.
