At one time, this house would have been inhabited by a coachman or someone else who had connections to those that were “ethelborn”: ‘Born into a noble family, high-born. Also as n. (with the and pl. concord): the nobility’ (OED). It wouldn’t have been the ethelborn themselves as this is the wrong side of the Ring (for those interested in the fin de siècle Austrian class system, Schnitzler’s works are a jolly good read). Regardless of whoever once lived here, it is now a block of flats, where thankfully no-one was hurt when this crane collapsed in the small hours.
Day #191 of a 365 project, where the daily pic is informed by the OED word of the day.
