250714 Alphin

An “alphin” is: ‘In the early game of chess: each of four pieces able to move two squares diagonally, jumping over the middle square. hist. in later use’ (OED). I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for today, as an alphin isn’t quite the same as a bishop, although it was an early ancestor. I played safe and found a chequer board on some steps in Lincoln St, and at least it enabled me to knock off another street for Bleeding London.

Day #204 of a 365 project, where the daily pic is informed by theĀ OED word of the day.
