I like owls and I didn’t realise that they were “death birds”: ‘An owl or other bird, the sight or sound of which is said to herald a death; esp. the barn owl, Tyto alba’ (OED). I was on a photographic mission, which didn’t include owls, so I had to take what I could find – an owl shaped mobile phone cover. At least that’s what I thought it was when I took it, but closer inspection suggests that it might actually be a cow:-S
