“Alterity” means ‘The fact or state of being other or different; diversity, difference, otherness; an instance of this’, (OED). I could write a treatise on the subject of how recognising otherness reinforces a concept that scholars try to overcome by recognising it as a concept. But since so much ink has already been spilled on this hand-wringing subject, I shall be pithy in my remarks. Namely, if MisterMac turned up the office wearing the latest fashion in trousers, we would hear mumbles about alterity from his colleagues.
