Ordinarily, a word like “pluvian” (‘Rain-giving, rain-bringing; rainy. In early use chiefly literary in Pluvian Jove, Pluvian Jupiter’, OED) would be easy – step outside front door and press shutter. Today, however, there was no sign of anything vaguely pluvian as we continued to bask in the Indian summer. The closest I could get was this rather lush garden, but I suspect that it has been more hosepipe driven than rain driven this year – now why couldn’t pluvian be tomorrow’s word? According to the forecast, it would be an easy one to bag. I would have expected something more Scottish today, but maybe pluvian is a subtle allusion …
