091014 German Oriflamme

Not a very exciting pic, but the flag flying outside the German Embassy does have some similarities with an “oriflamme”, which is: ‘The sacred banner of St Denis, of red or orange-red silk, which from the 12th to the 15th centuries the kings of France used to receive from the abbot of Saint-Denis (north of Paris) on setting out for war. Now hist.’ (OED). I’m now more than two-thirds into the project and I do enjoy looking for things that might fit the word, but sometimes they are just so obscure …
