091114 The Riant Pensioners

Given that OED stands for the Oxford ENGLISH Dictionary, I was expecting some sort of remembrance word, as it was a particularly special occasion. But there was always the chance that the OED might go in the direction of the wall, as today was also the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, saving a remembrance word for Armistice Day proper on Tuesday. So I was somewhat surprised to see that today’s word was “riant” meaning: ‘Of a person or a person’s disposition, actions, etc.: smiling, mirthful, cheerful, light-hearted’, (OED), which seems to me neither one thing nor the other (unless I’m being particularly dense and missing something). But the dear old Chelsea Pensioners are always a riant band and neatly bridge the gap between the word and the event of the day. But the OED had better find something appropriate for Tuesday …
