Well, this is a sobering, post-merriment word – “Childermas”, meaning ‘Childermas day. The festival of the Holy Innocents (28 December), commemorating the massacre of the male children of Bethlehem by Herod (Matthew 2:16)’, (OED). Thankfully, there wasn’t much of this going on here, so I opted for today’s newspaper – at least it’s unique to the 28th December.
