Today’s word was rather difficult to portray – “Babbitry” meaning: ‘Behaviour and attitudes characteristic of or associated with the character George Babbitt (see Babbitt n.2); esp. materialistic complacency and unthinking conformity’, (OED). The Austrians are very good at conforming, but trying to find the appropriate middle-class representation of this wasn’t easy, particularly as I was on my way home. I have therefore chosen this pic, first of all because I like it and secondly, it could be argued that there is some babbitry here in the walking in the right direction along a one-way street … yes, it’s tenuous, but I can’t miss my flight.
