“Peculation” is: The appropriation of money or property held in trust for another by a servant, employee, or official; esp. the embezzlement of public funds belonging to a ruler, state, or government. Also: an instance of this’, (OED). I wondered if the owner of this tiara had been forced to sell it as a result of being the victim of peculation. I didn’t buy it – tempting as it was – because I can’t remember the last time I received an invitation indicating that they should be worn.
