This is more of a prompt to me as a reminder to re-read Nevile Shute. Slightly old fashioned and not very politically correct, but jolly good yarns and so prescient. Although whilst on the subject of stupidity, I have bought a lovely new notebook, which is a must-have for aspiring novelists: In my Humble Opinion is a journal to catalogue ‘why people are like that today’. Each double page spread has an apt quotation (for example, from Mark Twain: ‘Such is the human race. Often it does seem such a pity that Noah didn’t miss the boat.’ ) and then there is a page for ranting about whoever has upset, irritated or annoyed you. Much more therapeutic than a ‘things to be happy about’ list, although I do have one or two items I could add to that as well …
