Prologue
The story opens with a funeral. It’s taking place at the Zentral Friedhof in Vienna and the weather is appositely Novembral. The opening line could have been “It was a dark and stormy day …” but it’s not; it’s the even more original “Ashes to ashes, dust to dust”. Every funeral needs a good requiem, so the first item on the play-list is from Mozart’s Requiem and as this is the introduction to the novel, I have chosen the introitus.
