The events in the novel take place over one weekend in November 1955 – at least that’s the plan at the moment, but who knows where the Phantom Pen will lead? There is a lot of flashback in the book and our first trip back in time is to New Year’s Eve, 1937. Die Fledermaus puts everyone in a good mood and leaves them feeling full of optimism and hope for 1938. If only they knew … So before things take a turn for the worse, let’s enjoy a bit of frivolity. I’ve found a very odd performance of So muß allein ich bleiben from the Theater an der Wien. Strange in many ways, but excellent taste in fabric (Rosalinde’s frock) and the decor, both of which are scarily like the wallpaper we’ve used in our bathroom.
